Other releases by The Stooges

The bonus tracks on the 2CD RHINO re-issue of their 1st LP 'The Stooges' are lost gems & extended jams from studio masters. Total classics & makes you wonder why John Cale decided all that guitar madness wasn't gonna' make the final mix? Perhaps he didn’t want them usurping the Velvet Undergrounds’ crown as the ‘Loudest Mofo’s on the block. The 2CD RHINO re-issue of ‘Funhouse’ is essential. For those who don’t have the ‘Funhouse’ Box the 2nd disc compiles the ‘best’ versions from the box into an easily digestible collection. Thankfully the 23 minute LA Blues doesn’t make an appearance.
The budget price DEMON RECORDS compilation 'Penetration' has true gold hidden away - including (an unlisted as such) stunning alt mix/version of 'Johanna' along with alt’ and master tape mixes from the 'Kill City' LP. The other tracks are the usual suspects from other comp's, but the sound quality is above average and a great way for anyone to discover a way into the world of The Stooges archive.
There a quite a few Stooges live shows on LP and disc. Depending on the label of release the sound veers between AWFUL and Acceptable. The BOMP 2XCD 'Double Danger Live NYC 1973' is worth picking up as it provides insane & great live versions of songs featured on the rehearsal collections.
BOMP have long been Stooges by default and have released a myriad of collectables over the years.
Many are worth owning for the art-work alone including 3D spec’s with the ‘Jesus Loves The Stooges 10” EP. Sadly for them a lot of their excellent product is still collectable, but now made musically obsolete by the ‘Heavy Liquid’ box and the plethora of Hi-Fi Stooges archives hitting the rack.
The 'Raw Power' sessions included in 'Heavy Liquid' are the bona-fide deal. Other CD's in the mould of 'Rough Power' and it's countless imitators claim to be 'alt rejected mixes and lost masters' when in fact they are rough studio reference mixes that Iggy & The Boys would listen to when picking versions, mixes & deciding on duff notes and potential overdubs. There must be another couple of Tape-Reels somewhere in the CBS/Sony/Universal vaults. From the evidence of the box sets we know they didn't mind doing take after take until they found the right tone. Let's hope they dig up some alt takes of 'Penetration & Death Trip'. As for the Iggy Remix of ‘Raw Power’… It’s awful. Don’t waste your time or money. The original Bowie Mix is the best. I constantly hear people complain the original mix is muddy and plain weird. It’s supposed to sound like that! Production wise it has more in common with Howling Wolf and late period Coltrane. You can’t hear the drums, so what, that’s jazz and that’s the blues played thru the ears of The Stooges.
Buy this stuff. EASY ACTION are beyond just selling records. Their depth, detail and quality is evidence of that. Buy this stuff so they can add more to their archive and share these gems with us less fortunate souls who weren’t around to record these Stooges gigs on stone age mono-tapes. Bless them one and all. The Zealots who recorded these tapes so people like you and I could sit around decades later thinking: Man oh man - wish I’d been at that show…!
I'm hoping EASY ACTION are gonna' do us a BIG favour and box up all the various sets & dates of The Stooges LA Whisky shows. If they ever come up with a Studio multi-track Master Tape of 'Open up and bleed' - Now that would be a REAL Christmas gift.
