Times Review of Stooges - You Want My ActionOk how do i start here ? We have bought tapes of four Stooges shows from spring 1971 when the line up included James & Ron on guitar with Jimmy Recca on bass and what a sound they make too ! mind blowing isnt the word . Why this whole thing was resricted to a handful of gigs, with all the set list bar ’I got a right’ being scrapped is beyond comprehension this band are truly magnificent . These shows illustrate just how shoddy the Michigan Palace show or the Whiskey a go go shows really were in comparison.

And not a fuckin piano in sight !

These recordings are Audience recordings!

The Electric Circus shows in New York and the Detroit show being recorded by then manager Danny Fields who has kindly written a forward for us . The wonderful thing that you get with the audience recording is that you pick up bits of conversation of the New York crowd from that gig which i find endearing . We also have photos from the gig shot by Eric Rudolph. and Lisa Gottlieb The St Louis Factory show has been very poorly bootlegged but the recording made by John Caspermeyer has been taken into the studio and improved and again we have photos from the concert shot by Craig Petty and his first hand account of the gig.

The Ups and downs:

The documentative importance of these recordings are why we are bringing them to you.

The band have authorised this!

The sound of the Stooges in 1971 themselves is something to wallow in, they were a band on fire, despite whatever recreational activities were going on in and around this time . Simply they were brilliant compared to the mess that you here on Metallic ko.
Blistering twin guitars abound throughout and the sound quality of the band is pretty good throughout unfortunately iggys vocals are often lost as he leaves the stage for a burger or to be sick ..actually sometimes he doesnt leave the stage to be sick ....you think im joking ??

This set is for the hard core fans only

It is 4 concerts of exactly the same set of 6 songs which include to the best of our knowledge I Got a Right , You Dont Want my Name. Possibly Fresh Rag however the surviving Stooges dont seem to be able to recall what the songs were called so we havent set out a set list of made up names.
They are all recorded by audience members on cassette.

I cannot stress enough that although our recordings are enormously superior to the Factory bootleg they are still audience recordings.

There will only be 1000 of these sets made available
They will be exclusively available from the web site.

So we only have one shot at this so everything including the kitchen sink is going in.
One of the greatest bands in the world playing a handful of gigs with a twin guitar line –up which lasted all of two months with a live set list that was scrapped and never performed nor recorded again.

My personal recomendation is MAKE SURE YOU GET ONE ! The performance is out of this world !!

Nice set; the performances are pretty audible, despite the poor quality of these audience recordings. It's a must have for any serious Stooges fan. The packaging is nice , but too fragile : mine has arrived completely fucked up : because of its weight, the booklet wich contains the 4 CD's has fallen apart the cover.
#35 - SF Sorrow - 11/22/2009 - 12:19
Order 2 months ago, charged inmediately and never received it. Tried to communicate many times by e-mail and was ignored. This is the WORST experience I have EVER had ordering by mail, I was rip-off. Now I will have to fill a reclaim with my credit card to try to recuperate my money. I will NEVER order from you again.
#34 - Rolando - 11/16/2009 - 15:10
The stooges 1971 box is the most treasured item in my collection ! Easy action has done a great job on this !! Everything from cover to pictures and lay out !! I`ve been waiting since 1992 to hear more of the stooges 71 material. I`m so happy about this that it`s a dream come true. I think that the disc 4 that E.A was in doubt to put in the box set is the coolest versions of the songs. Especially "Fresh rag" on disc 4 is raw !! Thank you Easy Action for making this available !!!

Finally getting around to say thanks for the in-your-face wall of Stooge sound. Can only wish Iggy would revive these trks on the next tour w/ J.W. Although the 4th disc is a little thwarting to listen to it does have its moments. While saving space here from a full blown review will just note that the presentation is very nice and once I dropped the needle during a SHORT DRIVE UP THE EAST COASt I was not expecting the punishing music tattoo I got from this line-up, the rhythm section is fierce and I literally felt fear listening to this music. After a 2.5 hr drive I get out of my car & was shaking! (OK, I did have the vol up very loud). Perhaps the low production values of the original recordings contributed to the Black & White grain of the overall ambiance. It's certainly not like any Iggy I've heard before.

The stooges set arrived monday - brilliant - i love it. the shirt is cool as hell, and i'm floored by the music... amazing that most of those songs never saw release. there should have been a 3rd elektra album!! the liner notes and photos take it to a whole new level... 2 friends are going to order their own now that they've seen mine. jealousy has set in.

#27 - remi - 10/17/2009 - 04:34
Thank you for a great package. It was definitely worth the wait. I never had a doubt it would get here and also blow me away. Looking forward to give a deeper listen this weekend. You've definitely unearthed something that I never in my lifetime expected to hear. Keep up the great work.

Kevin

PS - Funny how you Brits are so much better at archiving American music than the Americans themselves.
#26 - kevin - 10/17/2009 - 04:31
This box set looks awesome. This is some top notch packaging. It really looks as professional as anything Rhino-Handmade or Columbia-Legacy would produce. There is some blisteringly wicked guitar work from Ron Asheton and James Williamson on these recordings. Scott Asheton and Jimmy Recca are hammering it too. I bet it was an incredible experience to have witnessed these shows. There just isn't any band today doing anything this intense. Well, except for the Stooges of course. Man, if the vocals had only been as audible as the instruments these recordings would have been some of the most kick ass Stooges performances ever. There still damn good even for lo-fi. I am completely satisfied with this box set. For what EA had to work with I doubt anyone could have done any better.
I seriously don't think the delay was EA's fault. Once they shipped them it was out of their hands. The UK was/is having some sort of postal problems and for us here in the states the USPS just plain lost mine. Once the folks at EA were sure that mine had definitely been lost they were quick to FedEx me a replacement. I am just a impatient SOB and regret wrongly bad mouthing them in the forums. They seem to be determined to satisfy their customers. If you are a real Stooges fan you definitely want to add this box set to your collection. They did a great job
with this Stooges release, the Stooges "Heavy Liquid" release and both the MC5 and Sonic's Rendezvous Band box set releases. I look forward to EA's future projects.
#25 - ElRoi - 10/13/2009 - 13:59
Thanks a lot man, it was a lot better of what I expected, the sound , the packaging, the booklet, the photos, the guitar work of James & Ron!!! . No doubt it It was worth waiting for .
#24 - chris69 - 10/13/2009 - 09:59
Great packaging, ferocious-sounding shows!!!
Yeah, they're bootleg quality, and I do wish Iggy's vocals were a Hell of a lot louder, but dammit, I'm certainly glad this was released!
#23 - John O. - 10/13/2009 - 08:19
Thanks very much to everyone who has commented on the packaging. IT MEANS A LOT TO ME

And the next buy will be The Up!!Cheers!
#20 - rolf - 10/05/2009 - 12:10
I still have nothing. Never again will I buy directly from Easy Action. Never. At this point I am seriously doubting the validity of their claim that all orders were shipped by September 22. I will freely admit that the USPS is one crappy institution when it comes to delivering shipments promptly, but these things were supposedly confirmed in the US on Sept. 23 and it still hasn't arrived. Either it's lost or it was not sent on the date claimed. Ultimately, I don't have what I paid for and seriously don't think at this point that I am going to get it. EA can either send me one today via FedEx or UPS with a tracking number or refund my money and I can order one from Amazon and most assuredly have it before the end of the week. Period.
#19 - ElRoi - 10/05/2009 - 09:38

I just received my copy of You Want My Action and it is a thing of beauty. Okay, I\'ve only had the chance to listen to about half of it and I certainly wish the vocals were louder (as I\'m sure you do!) but it is a terrific package. Thanks so much for putting these tapes out.
And, by the way, I was the one who made the crack about storming the gates over on the Stooges Fan Board. It was all worth the wait. Thanks so much for handling The Stooges legacy with more love and care than anyone else ever has. There are those of us who do appreciate it.

Dear Stooges Fans,
we hope you don't mind that we have removed any comments that solely ask about delivery dates. Thankfully this set is now being dispatched so we need to make room for the comments from the lucky folks receiving theirs.

Please tell us what you think? Worth the wait eh?

Many thanks
Edie
