"Melancholy but never maudlin, it's spellbinding stuff. . " Overplay.com
"This is acoustic music at its most effective, with songs so exquisite they find a place inside your head to fit perfectly." Jo Overfield
BBC Radio 2 Janice Long: "I think its lovely!"
BBC Radio Derby: "Breathtaking!.......Light's up a room"
"One of Derby's best kept secrets - a dreamy singer-songwriter who's been penning tunes since her early teens. Everyone's rumbling on about James Morrison being discovered in Derby but there's no way he's the last word in talent from this city.... Beautiful melodies, crystal clear voice, fantastic harmonies - and a worldly wisdom far beyond her 25 years. Taking in influences including Shawn Colvin and Suzanne Vega, Julie has a dreamy, melancholic sound that's earnt her a loyal following and superb live reputation." BBC Derby
Biography in brief...
From a young age Julie has surrounded herself with music. She’d be sat for hours wearing headphones in the front room listening to her parents Beatles, Melanie, Joni Mitchell & Simon and Garfunkel LP’s and grew up admiring musicians who did more than just sing in studios and look pretty on the cover of magazines.
Picking up her first acoustic guitar at the age of 12 she began to develop a knowledge, understanding and deep passion for the guitar and began writing and performing her own songs.
Since her early teens Julie has always been keen to write and play as much as possible, jumping at any chance to play around the UK. Julie spent a few years gigging & writing with local bands playing many popular music venues including Ronnie Scotts, Birmingham and sharing stages with other established musicians including Glen Tilbrook.
In 2003 Julie collaborated with producer & DJ Rob Webster (Retroesque Records) creating the ‘chill out’ project ‘Ambient souls’ and released the album ‘Retreat from the noise’ to rave reviews. In 2003/2004 she recorded with local band The Basement Tapes on their song ‘In The Novocaine’. These collaborations gave Julie the opportunity to explore her talents within new genres and demonstrated her vocal and musical talent compliment many musical styles.
Julie’s main passion lies in song writing, and performing live. Receiving glowing responses at every performance since her first solo gigs back in 2002, Julie pulled together a few of her songs, recorded, produced & released her first Acoustic EP in 2004 - through her own label Perrito Records with each batch selling out!.
Julie is fast gaining a diverse and fervent following, including BBC Radio’s Janice Long, who recently played Julie’s track Simple things on her BBC Radio 2 show. “I think it’s lovely”.
